Description

William Mason Brown launched his career as a portrait and landscape painter, but turned to still life subjects during the 1860s, which brought him success and renown. The various objects in this example are rendered in meticulous detail, capturing a range of textures from the soft fuzz of peach skin through the coarse webbing of cantaloupe rind.
A horizontally oriented oil painting depicts a lush still life on a white, fringed cloth emerging from a dark, shadowy background. Clustered at the center is a large, textured cantaloupe flanked by peaches and grapes to the left. To the right are a pear and scattered raspberries. In the foreground, a white-handled knife lies beside several nuts. A glass goblet and a bowl filled with small pears stand behind the fruit.
