Description

Dughet spent his whole career in Rome. At the age of fifteen he entered the studio of Nicolas Poussin (1593/94-1665), who married his sister. Dughet concentrated exclusively on landscapes, preferring a rugged type of scenery, widely imitated well into the 18th century.
A horizontally oriented oval oil painting depicts a rocky landscape with large, dark trees on the right, two hunters and several white and brown dogs moving past them. To the left, a waterfall cascades between jagged cliffs. A small building crowns a distant hill before pale mountains under a blue sky with white clouds. One figure wears a blue tunic. The scene uses earthy greens and browns with textured strokes capturing the rugged terrain.
