Description

Van de Velde and his father picked up their lives in Amsterdam in 1672 and moved to England to paint for the king. Their paintings of the Royal Navy’s massive ships celebrated England’s power in war and trade.
A horizontally oriented oil painting depicts a maritime scene under a hazy, cloud-filled sky. On the right, a large wooden warship with gold ornamentation releases a thick plume of white smoke over the calm, reflective water. Several smaller vessels surround it, including a longboat with rowers in the lower left and a boat with a red sail on the right. Tiny figures occupy the decks and boats atop the still, glassy sea.
