A vertically oriented oil painting in visible brushwork depicts a man with light skin tone and a mustache looking toward us. He wears a gray suit, holding a paint-covered palette and brushes near a tall canvas edge. Behind him, a bearded man emerges from the muted, brown background, placing a hand on the artist's shoulder. A white handkerchief and patterned tie provide detail against the layers of paint filling the shadowy studio.

New York sale, Christie's, 20 May 1978 (lot 94, repr.), via Shepherd Gallery, New York to Noah L. Butkin, Cleveland. Bequeathed to the cma in 1980.
