Did You Know?

Gilman discovered his passion for art after a major fall led to a hip injury that left the young artist-to-be confined to his bed where he began to sketch.

Description

Sylvia Gosse, the sitter for this painting by British artist Harold Gilman, was also an artist, specializing in etching. She was also known for being somewhat introverted. Does she seem to reveal any of her personality in this portrait?
A vertically oriented oil painting depicts a seated woman with a light skin tone turned toward our right. Thick, visible brushstrokes define her face with patches of lavender, green, and pink paint. She wears a dark blue coat, a black scarf, and a blue headband. To our left, her shadow falls against a light pink wall decorated with green and red floral patterns. A dark red cabinet edge anchors the right side of the portrait.
