Description

Frederick H. Evans is recognized as the foremost architectural photographer of his day. A vocal defender of "straight" or unmanipulated photography, Evans was obsessed with technical and aesthetic perfection and never touched up his negatives or prints. His use of the platinum print process enabled him to render fine, accurate detail and an exquisite range of tones. Chateau Montesquieu depicts one of many great buildings the artist documented in France.
A vertically oriented platinum print depicts a stone chateau rising from a mirror-like moat. To the right, a massive circular tower with a conical roof and thin spire dominates the composition. A row of small arches circles beneath its roofline. An adjacent wing with tall chimneys and rectangular windows extends to the left. Shadowy trees line the distant bank. Smooth, monochromatic tones and blurred grasses in the foreground define the atmosphere.
