Description

Chiefly a reproductive printmaker, he made about 360 prints after the leading Italian artists of the period, including Parmigianino, Giulio Romano, and Titian. One of the few prints designed and executed by Bonasone, this is an exceptional work. Its innovative use of etching to achieve dramatic tonal effects probably results from Parmigianino's influence.
A vertically oriented black ink print depicts a central figure rising from a stone tomb into a radiant burst of light. Holding a banner topped with a cross, he ascends as armored soldiers in the foreground recoil. Two figures lie sprawled on the ground, while others shield their eyes or flee. Fine cross-hatching and sharp, diverging lines create dramatic contrast between the glowing figure and the dark foreground.
