Description

This thangka includes a series of donor portraits of Hindu laypeople from Rajasthan, who sponsored this painting for a Buddhist temple. It is from a fascinating moment in Nepalese history when Nepal was governed by the Rajput Gurkha clan.
A square-oriented fabric painting depicts, in the upper three-fourths, a red-skinned, golden-crowned figure seated cross-legged on a lotus throne within a large red circle. Central to the scene, two standing figures in red and green garments flank the throne near two blue peacocks. Behind them rise teal mountains and white clouds with small figures. Against a dark lower register, seven kneeling figures face central offerings. A floral border frames the composition.
