Description

This is the title page from a series of 24 etchings connected with the commedia dell'arte, a form of comic theater developed in Italy during the 1500s. The actual title and inscriptions are related to a carnival song and dance from Naples.
A horizontally oriented etching in dense black-inked fine lines depicts three masked figures across a stage. At left, a man with a long nose and plumed hat plays a stringed instrument. Centered, a bearded man in baggy clothes crouches while raising a vessel overhead. To the right, another long-nosed man holds an open box. Behind curtains, two figures peek out. Large text across the bottom reads BALLI DI SFESSANIA.
