Did You Know?

Maurice Denis painted this early in his career, when he was only 21.

Description

Delicate, elegantly folded hands in this painting allude to the sitter’s musical abilities. Eva Meurier, the sister-in-law of the artist, was a talented pianist. Maurice Denis painted the portrait on a fragment of an abandoned picture, hints of which appear around the edges of the composition, as if Eva’s portrait is mysteriously emerging from another painting.
A vertically oriented oil painting depicts a woman with light skin tone seated on a woven chair, her body turned left while looking toward us. She wears a high-necked, dark green dress detailed with vertical light-green stripes. Her dark hair is piled high. Behind her, a textured olive-green wall is accented by pink blossoms above and three white flowers to the left, all rendered with thick, dappled paint strokes.
