Description

Seen here at the age of 15, Moses Seymour Jr. holds a book and cane, suggesting that he reads and walks in harmony with nature. The portrait was commissioned by his father, a former Revolutionary War major who lived in Litchfield, Connecticut. Artist Ralph Earl was the leading painter in the Connecticut River Valley, returning there after receiving training in London.
A vertically oriented naturalistic oil painting depicts Moses Seymour Jr., a youth with light skin tone, seated outdoors against a landscape of hills and water. Looking toward us with a slight smile, he wears a pale gray coat, white waistcoat, and yellow breeches. His right hand holds a small brown book while his left hand grasps a tall yellow cane. His form is set against the dark, leafy background.
