Did You Know?

The Chimú forged an empire that thrived until the 1460s, when the Inka incorporated it into their own imperial domain.

Description

This garment may have been found with others in the collection that formed a matched set worn by a noble of the Chimú, who rose to power on Peru’s north coast after the year 1000.
An off-white woven cotton band, folded at the top, divides into four narrow strips. Each strip transitions into a thick, textured section of tightly wrapped horizontal cords. From these densely worked segments, long, twisted tails extend downward, ending in frayed tips. The fabric shows subtle weave details and tan variations, laid out vertically to highlight the structural transition from flat woven cloth to heavy, corded tassels.
