Description

The porcelain bowl in this painting most likely came from China. Political turbulence in China effectively eliminated ceramic imports to the West by the 1640s, so the bowl would have been considered at least as valuable as the gold object on the table.
A horizontally oriented oil painting in dark tones depicts a rich still life. On a dark table, a peeled lemon and blue and white porcelain bowl of fruit sit near a red crayfish and sliced fig. Translucent green grapes with broad leaves dominate the center. To the right, open oysters, an orange, and cherries rest beside an ornate gold stand holding a tall glass. The arrangement is set against a shadowy background.
