Did You Know?

The artist's namesake, Gifford Pinchot, was the first chief of the United States Forest Service.

Description

Gifford created several paintings depicting forest interiors, including this intimately scaled canvas set amid full autumnal blaze. The dense network of overarching trees casts shadows on the rugged ground below, restricting sunlight to haphazard patches. A solitary hiker is visible in the distance.
A vertically oriented oil painting with thick, textured brushstrokes depicts a forest path. Foreground trees with warm brown, orange, and red autumn foliage arch toward each other, framing a small patch of pale blue sky at the center. On the right, a thick trunk with patches of white bark stands prominently. Light reflects off stones and fallen leaves on the ground, while the path recedes into a dark, hazy brown mist.
