Description

William Hart painted several compositions similar to Autumn Scene in the Adirondacks, in which trees arch over a stream, framing a distant view of sky. This example is unusual because of its inclusion of deer--visible in the shadows at lower left--which rarely appear in the artist's works.
A vertically oriented oil painting depicts a dense autumn forest. On our left, two brown deer stand by a shallow stream under dark orange foliage. Center, pale light filters through a hazy opening, illuminating a distant waterfall. On our right, a white birch tree leans inward against a backdrop of deep red leaves. The scene is defined by rich, earthy tones and thick brushstrokes that frame a bright, central vista.
