Did You Know?

The artist was very fond of flowers and took pleasure in gathering and arranging bouquets, especially for his breakfast table.

Description

Martin Johnson Heade painted approximately 150 floral still life compositions during his long career. In this relatively stark example, a single branch of apple blossoms is propped on a tabletop and supported by an undecorated wall.
A vertically oriented oil painting with detailed brushstrokes depicts a gnarled branch extending from the lower right across a dark brown surface. Against a muted green-gray background, clusters of pale pink and white blossoms with dark pink buds and green leaves bloom in the center. A single pink flower lies in the lower left. Light from the upper left highlights the soft petals and the mossy, textured surface of the twisted branch.
