Description

Artist John Gadsby Chapman spent much of his career in Italy, and many of his images of its people and countryside were sold to American tourists. He created approximately ten versions of Harvest on the Roman Campagna, a composition that depicts several workers amid a cut wheatfield. In the center, a team of horses threshes the grain by trampling upon it.
A horizontally oriented oil painting depicts a landscape where people with light skin tones harvest grain. In the foreground left, figures rest by golden haystacks and a white tent. Centrally, a man drives horses across a threshing floor. To the right, more people and oxen gather near piled hay. A wide plain recedes toward distant hills and a mountain, with colors becoming hazier under a pale, expansive sky.
