Description

At a time when the northeast coast of Florida was becoming a popular tourist destination, Thomas Moran visited the area in February and March of 1877. He made many sketches around St. Augustine and Jacksonville. During the coming months, back in his Newark, NJ, studio, the artist used these sketches as source material for more than a dozen oil paintings, including Fort George Island, Florida.
A vertically oriented oil painting depicts a coastal landscape under a sky of white and gray clouds with soaring birds. In the foreground, dark marsh grass borders shimmering pools of water. At center, a man and woman with medium-dark skin walk across the sand; she balances a basket on her head. To the left, a beached ship rests near tiny figures. Tall, spindly palm trees rise from a verdant sand dune on the right.
