Did You Know?

Ten years after painting Orchid Blossoms, artist Martin Johnson Heade married at the age of 64.

Description

At the time he created this work, Martin Johnson Heade had made three trips to Central and South America. As an outgrowth of these experiences, he made a large number of paintings of birds and flowers, especially orchids, in a tropical setting.
A vertically oriented oil painting depicts a large, pale-lavender orchid with a ruffled, deep-pink center hanging from a thick green vine. The blossom dominates the upper right. In the lower left, a small hummingbird with a purple throat perches on a branch. Below, a dark, misty jungle recedes toward distant mountains under a hazy blue-green sky. Light highlights the delicate orchid petals against the shadowy, earthy landscape and lush foliage.
