Did You Know?

This tapestry is one from a series of eight that depicts the tragic love story of Dido and Aeneas. They were gifted to the museum for display in the armor court.

Description

Achates, with spear in hand, presents Cupid, who is disguised as Aeneas's son, to Queen Dido. He offers her gifts to encourage her to love Aeneas who is seated at her side. Attendants are preparing a banquet that Dido is giving in honor of Aeneas and his companions.
A horizontally oriented silk and wool tapestry is crowded with light-skinned figures. Centrally, a crowned woman in blue sits with palms outward. To her left, a man in a red cloak watches a boy on her right offering gold cloth. Numerous attendants cluster beneath heavy blue drapery. An ornate border featuring floral garlands, winged children, and dolphins frames the scene, flanked by floral columns.
