Description

A Lithuanian immigrant, Blazys introduced modernist sculpture to Cleveland upon his arrival in 1925. These figures merge rhythmic movement inspired by music with faceted, geometric planes derived from Cubism.
A dark brown bronze sculpture with polished highlights depicts a standing dancer on a rounded base, her head tilted to gaze upward and left. Her right hand rests on her hip while her left arm extends to clutch her flared skirt. She wears a faceted headscarf and a cloak with wide, angular sleeves. Smooth, geometric planes define the sharp folds of her garments, creating a rhythmic, stylized sense of movement.
