Head of a Man

Head of a Man

Frederick William MacMonnies

(American, 1863-1937)

Charcoal (rubbed in places), with traces of brown chalk

Support: Cream(3) laid paper

Sheet: 57.2 x 39.7 cm (22 1/2 x 15 5/8 in.)

Gift of Mrs. Henry White Cannon 1939.547

In this drawing, MacMonnies drew not only with the point of his charcoal but also with the side of the stick to create a sense of volume and shading. Such richly tonal charcoal drawings are characteristic of work produced at the Royal Academy in Munich, where this drawing was made.
