Description

As in many places, concerns with sickness and healing feature prominently in Guna society. Traditional healing methods require the intervention of trained medicine men and their tools. This panel features six incense braziers, sometimes used to expel disease.
A horizontally long cotton textile is embroidered with six stylized urn-like shapes in two rows against a bright red background. Thick black outlines define each form. Jagged layers of green, purple, yellow, and pink fabric are filled with small symbols inside each shape. Multicolored geometric motifs, including crosses and bars, populate the surrounding red field. The piece features the vibrant reverse-appliqué technique characteristic of Guna mola artistry.
