Description

This leaf and others are known to survive from a magnificent missal made for the use of Beauvais Cathedral. The two large decorated initials illustrate the preface to the Canon of the Mass.
A vertically oriented ink and tempera manuscript leaf on off-white vellum features two columns of black calligraphy. Historiated initials frame gold-bordered scenes: at our upper left, a priest with light skin tone in blue and white robes at an altar; at our lower right, a crowned figure faces a blindfolded person. Elaborate borders of gold and colorful vines frame the page, populated by small animals, including a rabbit.
