Description

Sekino was active in the circle of the influential søsaku-hanga artist Køshirø Onchi (whose work is also on view in this exhibition). Sekino focused on the harmony of poetic spirit and technique, which he considered essential to the woodblock print. His simplified representational style reflects his interest in the distillation of the geometric and organic shapes that give the Japanese landscape its characteristic flavor.
Print depicting a scene of tile peaked rooftops in a streaking rain. It is dominated by greys and browns and created with defined geometric and organic shapes looking over the rooftops to the dark silhouette of a mountain in the background. Between the roofs and mountain, shop signs in Japanese with yellow, peach, and green and a yellow umbrella provide color to a muted scene cut across by vertical streaks of rain.
