Description

One of the most fashionable artists of his time, Hondecoeter specialized in paintings of domestic and exotic birds, and other animals. Here the composition is enlivened by the swirl and excitement of the fighting rooster and turkey, set in a garden with classical architecture. A large picture like this must have been placed high over a fireplace in a rich Amsterdam house.
A horizontally oriented oil painting depicts a dramatic clash between a dark-feathered turkey and a leaping rooster with white and orange plumage. Below the scuffle, a speckled hen stands guard over tiny chicks. A hoopoe perches on a branch at left, while a magpie flies in the upper right. The background features a classical stone building and a pond within a wooded garden under a muted sky.
