Description

Avedon’s two types of photography—fashion and portraiture—astutely scrutinizes society’s faces and fashions, helping to reveal the culture’s identity. In 1945, he began working for the legendary art director Alexy Brodovitch at Harper’s Bazaar. Avedon quickly established a reputation for provocative work that transcended the genre of fashion photography. This photograph of a fabricated encounter between a stylishly dressed model and a Parisian bus conductor was part of a picture spread on current fall fashions from Paris. Published in the September 1955 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, the captivating image distills the essence of a moment in this milieu, succinctly capturing gesture, grace, and style.
