Escargots—"snails" in French—are spirals of wrapped, colorful thread that uncoil and "crawl" off sculpture pedestals like living organisms. Sheila Hicks's experimental art practice is inspired by her extensive travels; the artist looks to weaving cultures across the globe to inform the colors, sizes, and shapes of her work. Every six months, the museum will switch out the Escargots on display here, resulting in a vital, constantly changing array of color, patterning, and forms on view.
