Did You Know?

Hicks has lived and worked in Paris, France, since 1964, which has informed numerous French titles for her artworks, such as Escargots.

Description

Escargots—"snails" in French—are spirals of wrapped, colorful thread that uncoil and "crawl" off sculpture pedestals like living organisms. Sheila Hicks's experimental art practice is inspired by her extensive travels; the artist looks to weaving cultures across the globe to inform the colors, sizes, and shapes of her work.
