Hewit may have learned about color woodblock prints through an exhibition of these works held at the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1920.

Description

This print was made using a technique called white-line woodcut, in which black outlines are replaced by un-inked areas in which the paper’s tone shows through. Cleveland-based artist Mabel Hewit worked prolifically in this medium, using it to depict aspects of modern life. Here, a row of houses borders an expansive field with the forms of a factory in the far distance.
