Did You Know?

This etching portrays the extended family of the Christ Child including his cousin, Saint John the Baptist.

Description

Battista Agnolo del Moro made this etching to reproduce the most famous painting by Renaissance artist Raphael in his hometown of Verona. Raphael’s composition depicts the Christ Child with members of his family: Joseph, Mary, Mary’s cousin Elizabeth, and Elizabeth’s son John the Baptist. Battista’s graphic style emphasizes the glowing light around the grouping and their tender glances and touch.
A vertically oriented print in black ink depicts a woman seated with a child on her lap. To the left, a standing child offers fruit. To the right, an older figure sits with their chin resting on a hand. Behind them, a figure peers through a window. Fine cross-hatched lines build dense textures across the figures and distant landscape of classical ruins. A woven basket sits in the center foreground.
