Did You Know?

Martin Drölling’s daughter, this portrait’s sitter, went on to become an artist herself, painting under the name Madame Joubert.

Description

Martin Drölling was an accomplished portraitist, known for intimate depictions that revealed their sitters’ personalities. This drawing shows his daughter, Louise Adéone (1797–before 1831) wearing a fashionable dress and hat. The young woman meets the artist’s gaze directly and confidently, her features delineated by a combination of smooth lines and soft shading in charcoal.
A vertically oriented black chalk drawing on tan paper depicts a bust-length portrait of a woman with a light skin tone facing forward. Her dark, curly hair is wrapped in a cloth tied with a bow on our left. She wears a voluminous ruffled collar with a dark bow at the neckline and a knotted sash at her waist. Diagonal shading fills the background on our left, while faint inscriptions appear on the right.
