Description

Sitter Jeanne de Balzac (1891–1930) was a French actor who visited the U.S. during the early 1920s, attempting unsuccessfully to break into the American film industry. According to some reports, she was related to novelist Honoré de Balzac (1799–1850), a speculation she neither confirmed nor denied.
An oil portrait depicts a seated woman from the knees up, facing us directly with dark hair and pale skin. She wears a dark brown dress with puffed sleeves and gold trim, featuring a white flower pinned near her neckline. In her lap, her hands hold a black feather fan with a light blue handle. A pearl bracelet circles her wrist on our right, set against a dark, shadowy background.
