Did You Know?

This tapestry is one from a series of eight that depicts the tragic love story of Dido and Aeneas which were gifted to the museum for display in the armor court.

Description

Venus, seen here dressed as a huntress, advises her son, Aeneas, to visit Dido, queen of Carthage. Venus wants her son to stop wandering and marry the queen.
A vertically oriented tapestry depicts a landscape with people with light skin tones. A woman in yellow and blue garments holding a spear gestures toward two men. Central, a man wears golden armor and a red robe that enwraps him in layered folds. Between them, a seated figure rests a tenth their size. Ornate flowered columns frame the scene. Winged children flank an oval above, while sea creatures and a helmet stand below.
