Did You Know?

This tapestry is one from a series of eight that depicts the tragic love story of Dido and Aeneas. They were gifted to the museum for display in the armor court.

Description

Dido loves Aeneas and offers a sacrifice to the gods, specifically Juno, the goddess of marriage, to keep him in Carthage. Priests prepare to cut open the newly slaughtered heifer and read the future in its entrails.
A vertically oriented tapestry depicts people with light skin tones gathered within a columned hall. Centered, a woman in a yellow cloak and blue gown stands at a stone altar. Below her, a man in a red wrap kneels beside a severed bull head. Behind them, a man in white robes gestures toward the altar. A decorative border features floral wrapped columns, a central helmet below, and a crescent moon emblem above.
