Did You Know?

This tapestry is one from a series of eight that depicts the tragic love story of Dido and Aeneas. They were gifted to the museum for display in the armor court.

Description

Ready to depart on the fleet which you can see behind him, Aeneas tells the distraught Dido that he must follow his destiny and leave Carthage.
A vertically oriented tapestry depicts a scene within an ornate border. Centrally, a man in armor holds a spear on our left while a woman in a blue gown and crown faces him. Two more women watch from our right. Behind them, ships sit on our left while tall columns rise on our right. All people featured have light skin tones. Twisted columns and winged child figures decorate the border.
