Description

In this theatrical scene, the actor Fujimura Handay holds a small wooden bucket in his hand. The bucket is "dressed" in a straw hat and a robe that is decorated with the crest of one of the Soga brothers, who were the subject of a popular Japanese tale of revenge.
A woodblock print depicts a figure facing right, wearing robes with black and tan checkered patterns and circular floral motifs. Red-orange linings are visible beneath the garment's edges. The figure, with hair swept back and a pale face, holds a small doll wearing a striped conical hat. Black Japanese characters and a rectangular seal are in the lower right. The image sits on vertical, off-white paper showing signs of visible discoloration and age.
