Did You Know?

This panel has been trimmed slightly at the bottom, cutting off the scene.

Description

This panel was probably part of a small altarpiece of private devotion. The artist was active in Florence and Siena following the Black Death, which began in the late 1340s. His works, like others created during that troubled time, are charged with emotion.
A vertically oriented tempera and gold painting is composed of a pale, crucified Christ on a dark central cross. Red blood marks his skin. To our left, a figure in a blue cloak looks down. Below, a kneeling, blonde figure in a red robe gazes upward. To our right, a figure in dark clothing looks up. All four with light skin tones and golden halos against a cracked gold background with a floral border.
