Description

Swanevelt played an important role in the development of 17th-century landscape painting in Rome. Often regarded as a follower of Claude Lorrain (1600-1682), with whom he briefly shared a home, most scholars now believe that the influence was mutual. Swanevelt's landscapes are distinguished by the use of Roman peasants, rather than the classical figures preferred by his contemporaries.
A horizontally oriented oil painting depicts a lush landscape anchored by a large, central tree. To the left, figures wearing hats and a white dog cross a bridge while a man rests nearby. On the right, travelers lead pack animals toward a tall stone building. Muted greens and earthy browns define the terrain beneath a blue sky streaked with soft yellow clouds and hazy, distant mountains lining the horizon.
