Description

In his portrait by Joseph Blackburn, Boston civic administrator John Browne is seated with legs crossed at the knees, his right hand partially inserted in his waistcoat, and his left hand pressed against his hip. Blackburn used this stock pose in other portraits he made of men, including one of Browne's brother-in-law.
A vertically oriented oil painting depicts John Browne, a man with light skin tone and a powdered white wig, seated turned slightly to our right at a table a small book rests on. He looks at us with a faint smile, wearing a brown coat with white ruffles and an ornate, metallic-trimmed waistcoat. His right hand is tucked into his waistcoat, while he emerges from a dark, shadowy background with a heavy curtain.
