Description

This sketch represents an apotheosis, or a rise to heaven, of a saint. However, the precise identity of the figure remains unknown, since documents describing the commission have not yet been discovered, and the military costume does not sufficiently distinguish him.
A vertically oriented oil painting is composed of dark clouds and muted earth tones save for a red-clothed man with a medium skin tone. Supported by winged figures with light skin tones, he reaches upward. Below him, a nude, winged child with a light skin tone holds a palm branch. At our top left, a light-skinned winged head floats. Behind, a dark landscape rests beneath a shadowed sky.
