Description

These plaques were probably originally placed at the end of the arms of a processional cross. They are decorated in an enameling technique called basse-taille in which colorful translucent enamel pastes are fused over an engraved and chased silver plaque.
Two silver quatrefoil plaques with translucent enamel depict religious scenes. In the left scene, a winged angel on our left faces the Virgin Mary, who kneels with hands crossed over her chest beneath a hovering dove. In the right scene, two figures lower Christ from a central cross; one supports him from our left while another stands on a ladder. Both scenes feature slender silver figures against diamond-patterned blue backgrounds and green grounds.
