Description

Guérin found the lithographic crayon to be perfect for rendering the clarity of sculptural form. He used a combination of subtle hatching, smooth contour lines, and shading to represent a young Greek artist surprised by an inspirational visit from a winged female as he works late into the night.
A vertically oriented print in black ink depicts a bare-chested man seated at center, reaching toward a woman reclining on clouds. He holds a drawing board while a small winged child sleeps at his feet. To our left, a table holds an hourglass while a rooster stands in an opening above. A tall oil lamp, globe, and scrolls litter the foreground. French text "Le Vigilant" runs along the bottom.
