Rhythm of the Soil

Viktor Schreckengost

(American, 1906-2008)

With base: 31.7 x 17.4 cm (12 1/2 x 6 7/8 in.); without base: 28 x 47 cm (11 x 18 1/2 in.)

Gift of The Cleveland Art Association 1947.78

This figure makes an interesting contrast with Schreckengost's earlier sculptures of African-American themes. In this piece, Schreckengost avoided bright glazes and emphasized the natural qualities of the clay. He also used a more abstract, cubist design than in his earlier ceramic sculpture.
