Description

Taira no Kanemori was one of the 36 poetic immortals of classical Japanese literature. This painting is a fragment of what was once a handscroll depicting all 36 poets.
A handscroll segment depicts a seated man with a light skin tone and a thin mustache. He wears voluminous black court robes and a peaked black hat, holding a vertical wooden baton. Behind him rests a white folding screen on a patterned gold mat. To the right, vertical columns of black Japanese calligraphy fill the cream-colored background. Decorative purple and gold floral borders frame the composition at the top and bottom.
