Description

The curved neck and bell-shaped lip of this vase resemble the silhouette of plants, such as reeds and lotuses, seen in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, art, and architecture. Informed by the geometric shapes seen in Cubism and the Vienna Secession, Art Deco was a prominent style in the 1920s and 1930s. Art Deco drew inspiration from many different cultures, including that of ancient Egypt. The artist who made this vase borrowed very literally from Egyptian antecedents.
Other artists were freer in their interpretations.
