The lower right leg and foot of this sculpture do not survive, and have been reconstructed.

Description

The hourglass-shaped jumping weights slung over his shoulder, together with the animal-skin punching bag on which he leans, characterize this youth as an athlete. The distinctive haircut, short with one long tress in back, may indicate a childhood vow, perhaps to be trimmed in a future ceremony. Several very similar sculptures exist in other collections, suggesting the existence of a single prototype, now lost.
A marble sculpture depicts a nude youth on an oval base, leaning on his right leg. His right arm crosses his chest, grasping a rounded weight, while his left arm is broken away, leaving a fragment on a tapering stone pillar. A second weight sits at the pillar's base. He has short, wavy hair and eyes directed downward. The figure is well-defined with a soft abdomen and thick, sturdy legs.
