Did You Know?

André Derain painted this view of parliament over a century ago, but you can still stand on Westminster Bridge and see the same vista.

Description

This painting is one of several views André Derain painted of London between 1905 and 1906. Such works exemplify mature Fauvism, a style of painting that utilized intense, arbitrary color and energetic brushwork, first developed
around 1904 by Derain, Maurice de Vlaminck, and Henri Matisse. Nicknamed the Fauves (wild beasts) by contemporary critics, the artists aimed for the liberation of color from reality, using it instead for compositional and expressive purposes.
